He’s a student at the Akwa Ibom State University and a friend of his was kind enough to lend him a laptop to meet his day-to-day computing needs. He had come to Eket town that weekend to sing at the ‘Evening Sacrifice’, a worship program organized by his Church. On returning to school, he dropped his belongings in his room and went to say hello to his friends in a different room. When he returned, the laptop was nowhere to be found.

He was devastated and wondered how he would come up with enough money to pay for the missing laptop. Then he prayed, ‘God, how can I finish singing to and worshipping you just yesterday, then have my laptop stolen today?’ As he prayed, he felt led to walk in a certain direction. He obeyed and kept praying, and then he got to a point along the way and saw a carton. He was led to stop and pick up the carton. When he did, he found his laptop under it. Overjoyed, he returned to share the good news with his friends.

His account reminded me of a similar experience I had while schooling at the Federal University of Technology, Minna. I had given my notebook to a colleague of mine who wanted to complete her notes but during one of the lectures we had later that day, we were notified that there would be a test on that course in a few days. I went to her room after the lecture to collect my book but she wasn’t there. Unfortunately, none of her roommates knew where she’d gone.

I began walking back towards my room but felt the need to go into a certain room not too far from mine, and then I had the urge to walk to the last corner in that room. Making my way past the corners and some of the curtains and wrappers put in place for privacy by the occupants, I said hello to some of them and finally got to the last corner. I found my colleague sitting on the bed and speaking to someone through the window. When she turned around and saw me, she was shocked. ‘How did you find me?’ she asked. I said, ‘I just came’. And she responded, ‘You are truly serving a living God’. Very interesting. This happened over a decade ago, but I can’t forget it.

God guides us in different ways, some more subtle than others; sometimes we don’t even realize it. But it sure feels good when we experience this type of leading. He said he would ‘guide you into all truth… and disclose to you what is to come’. He also said he would ‘lead you along the best pathway for your life’ and ‘advise you and watch over you’.

So, when next you need direction or guidance, remember help is available. Call on God. I like the way it’s captured in The Message: This is GOD’s message, the God who made the earth, made it livable and lasting, known everywhere as GOD: ‘Call to me and I will answer you. I’ll tell you marvellous and wondrous things that you could never figure out on your own’. Totally awesome!

Call Him.
