My kids can’t wait to be adults. They go on and on about becoming big like daddy and mummy and doing things adults do e.g., staying up late, using makeup, wearing heels, getting married, buying cars and having a little more liberty. Nathan uses me as a yardstick. ‘Mummy I’m at your chest level now, very soon I’ll be at your mouth, then your nose, then on top of your head… then I’ll be bigger than you!’ and I just say ‘Yes, that’s the plan… keep growing’.
It is interesting to note that for as long as we have had life on this planet, everything starts small. It’s like the correct order of things. Seeds grow into trees, cubs into lions, babies into children and then adults and buildings begin with foundations; and no matter how much we may desire to jump steps, there is a development process for everything that cannot be boycotted.
So I ask myself questions like – What stage am I at on this journey or in this endeavor? What am I supposed to be doing now? Is this where I should be? Am I late, on time or way ahead of my time? Where do I want to be? What adjustments do I need to make to get there? These questions help me put things in perspective and avoid putting myself under unnecessary pressures that stem from unrealistic expectations. These questions also help me channel my resources and energies in the right direction.
There is a purpose for the development process. It’s our chance to learn, to grow, to understand and master our systems, to know the right way to do things, to drop bad habits and develop good ones, to put structures in place and to develop the capacity to handle the demands of the next phases on our journey.
Life is a journey. Don’t give up. Don’t throw in the towel. Keep moving. It gets better.
