‘Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or ¬†governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter’…. Yeah, yeah… Most people know¬†about learning from ants but I discovered a few days ago that we can learn from trees too.

It was a dry Harmattan afternoon and I was out for a walk. I observed that the lush green leaves of the trees that beautify the walkway were beginning to turn brown. It was even more interesting because on all of them, the browning was closer to the trunk such that if you looked from a distance, you wouldn’t even know that any thing was amiss with these drought stressed trees.

It seems this particular tree doesn’t just shed its leaves, it does so strategically. As I wondered about this, the recession came to mind and the applicability of this tree’s strategy to everyday life became obvious – From time to time, we experience drought in one aspect of our lives or the other. We need to approach those seasons like Generals: Strategize!

Bearing in mind that the intent is to outlast the drought, sit back and outline your wants vs. your needs. What are those things you can live without, the things that are not critical for your survival? Those are the weights to shed. If you find yourself thinking there aren’t enough hours in a day, cut down on your wants-activities and focus on the needs. If you are getting stretched too thin in your finances, take out some unnecessary expenses. You can enjoy those luxuries in the future when the drought is over.

Your future is worth the sacrifice.
